Oh! What a Night!

The French/Australian Film Festival kicked off with a bang last night when 200 people attended a sellout CinéfestOZ's Gala Night to celebrate the opening of Busselton's most ambitious cultural event.

With the glitz and glamour of a Hollywood premier, Ace Cinema's foyer suite became the setting for an pening the likes of which have not been seen in the seaside town. The venue echoed to the sound of vocal talent 'Pascale', as she delighted the audience recalling the sound of 'Piaf'. Patrons sipped French champagne and the prize winning, ultra premium wine of Woodside's, Baudin Collection. The essence of France was in the air as aficionados and delighted film goers mixed with dignitaries, visiting film directors and screenwriters. The opening ceremony was appropriately and uniquely punctuated by the crack of a movie clapperboard which announced the opening.

Guests and patrons were ushered into the plush surroundings of Cinema 1 and introduced to Jimmy Jack, the screenwriter and collaborator for 'The Black Balloon', the Festival's premier opening film. The movie did indeed deserve its place of merit. This award winning Australian piece with its emotional and oft-times confronting humour seriously impacted its audience. It is beautifully crafted with polished cinematography, brilliant portrayals and a powerful story line. Patrons laughed, they cried and as the finishing titles rolled they applauded. This is a truly wonderful film with performances that deserve all the international acclamation recieved so far.

After an enlightening and highly entertaining Question and Answer session with Jimmy Jack most of the crowd strolled to the Festival Club in Queen Street continuing the party with french live entertainment and sensational food.

CinéfestOZ has truly arrived and if the Opening Night is anything to go by, it is here for a long time to come. Busselton's own CinéfestOZ is an Oscar winning performance or in the film vernacular. "Cut... It's a wrap!!!"
